The collection consists chiefly of business records, including account books and financial statements, advertising materials, internal publications, printed materials and newspaper clippings, photographs, and company history materials documenting the history and retail operations of Thalhimer Brothers, Inc., a Richmond, Va.-based department store chain. At its height, the company operated twenty-seven stores in four southeastern states. Records of or about various members of the Thalhimer family, prominent Jewish merchants in Virginia, appear throughout the collection, including materials of William Thalhimer (1809-1883), Isaac Thalhimer (1855-1930), William Blum Thalhimer (1888-1969), William Blum Thalhimer, Jr. (b. 1914), and Irving May (1891-1964).
